House Panel Approves Copyright Bill; Reader Q&A on HD Channel Sources and Upconversion
2004
Summary
A House of Representatives panel approved a sweeping copyright bill targeting peer-to-peer piracy and expanding federal enforcement powers against Internet copyright infringement. Site publisher Dale Cripps also responds to a reader question about which HD channels broadcast true HDTV versus upconverted content, providing a channel-by-channel breakdown of sources and formats.
The technical community has never thought
highly of protecting the value of electronically distributed
content from illegal copying through technical methods. It
always comes back to the same conclusion--there must be more
stringent laws and their enforcement as the only sure way of
adding copy protection.
Yesterday A House of Representatives panel
approved a sweeping new copyright bill that would boost
penalties for peer-to-peer piracy and increase federal police
powers against Internet copyright infringement.

Dale:
Are all
the programs on your daily list true HD?
I ask
because my local cable provider puts out an HD schedule for the
channels they carry.
Their
list seems to be missing some shows that are in your daily emailed
schedule.
And, in
your list, a number of channels are good enough to indicate when
shows are upconverted,
or have
a different aspect ratio. And the main broadcast networks only show
their HD material.
Should I conclude that the lists of programs for other channels are
all HD? or at least 35mm source and converted?
Specifically, is everything listed for channels like:
real
HD? or is there some upconversion among these programs?
And if
there is upconversion, how can I find out which are real HD and
which not?
Thanks
for your help, as always,
David
Keeble
Thank you David for asking. I think your
question is one many may have and so I will include my response in
tonight's edition. I will start by saying that all of the
information we publish comes from what is posted on the respective
web sites. There are times when error occurs and dealing with as
much data presented in a large variety of ways doesn't ease our task
in harvesting this information. Most of the program managers and
schedulers are not familiar with the origins or even what aspect
ratio is presented. I am entering talks now to make the
information more uniform channel to channel and with the key
information which you have asked about, i.e., aspect ratio, source,
upconversion or HDTV, and which HDTV.
Discovery HD Theatre -- 100% HDTV
1080i from 35mm, IMAX,, and video
Bravo - all HDTV 1080i sources is
most often 35mm or HDTV video. I suspect super 16mm is also
one of their sources.
Cinemax -- HDTV 1080i HDTV
ESPN HD 720p HDTV - Those
events listed are in HDTV 720p.
HDNET -- 100% 1080i HDTV with
some variations in the sources which does impact final quality.
HDNET Movies - 1080i HDTV from
35 mm flim source
HBO -- 1080i HDTV
Showtime -- 1080i HDTV as noted in the guide. We do list their
upconversions as well, but with clear notation
STARZ: HDTV 1080i from 35
mm film source
Encore HD -- 1080i HDTV from
35mm source
The Movie Channel - 1080i HDTV
from 35 mm source
INHD - All 1080i HDTV with a
variety of sources ranging from IMAX to 35mm to HDTV video (I
suspicion some 16mm)
PBS - the PBS Channel that we
feature is all 1080i HDTV with a variety of sources
When Contessa Mendoza was 17 years old and still in high school, she
made the tough decision to become a single mom. This exceptional young
lady went on to become the valedictorian of her high school graduating
class and eventually earned her masters degree. Despite enormous odds,
Contessa, who is a social worker, has given everything of herself to
raise her daughter and two foster kids. When it was decided that the
Van Nuys, California house where Contessa Mendoza and her family live
needed more space, the team of designers and workmen of "Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition" stepped in and made some dramatic changes,
including adding a second story to the house.
