COMING LATER TODAY FULL HDTV
GRID GUIDE (beta test) WITH 2 WEEKS ADVANCED LOOKUP
Dear Readers:A few years ago I introduced
a prime time grid and ran it for several months to great
acceptance and cheers. Many of you wrote in saying to please
continue with that grid guide as it made for an
easy assessment of your daily HDTV viewing. But the system I
employed was requiring from us a great deal of time late into the night and
this being still a small business a staff was not available to do it. But I
never forgot your passion for a grid guide and when the opportunity arose a few months ago to
work with the fine people at Tribune and our own Shane Sturgeon, I
took it. Together we have developed the beginnings of a wonderful grid guide
to help you and the industry identify HDTV programming at a glance. The image you see above is a screen capture of what this
new guide will more or less look like. (I am a great believer in
both functionality and form and I anticipate that this grid will
become no less than an art form for presenting to you the HDTV
programs, not only for the day, but for two weeks in advance.
Consider our present version of the grid guide--the one you
will see today--as a beta test. It has some bugs so don't be
disappointed should some function not work in your particular
browser. Whatever shortcoming there is today will be overcome. I
have signed a two year data contract with Tribune -- the leading
TV guide data central in the nation --and whether we use it or not
we owe that firm $50,000 + over those two years. I am highly
motivated to make it work for you and for it to be come the best
guide of it class. Don't be at all shy in contacting us. Let us know what you
think about the guide just as it is and then make your suggestions
and recommendations for what we can do to improve upon it.
Send your comments by email to
[email protected] and, if not bothersome, a copy to
[email protected] to reach me directly. I am very
interested in your comments. This is a big step for us and we want
it to lead to doing all of the right things to foster the use and
care of HDTV.
Now, please, take a look at the new grid guide by clicking on this
link
http://www.justhdtv.com:81/hdtv/guide.php
You should shortly see something that looks like the screen
shot above, only without the promotional images.
For those of you who now have the guide on
your screen I will point out
some of our present features and how to get started.
The guide is web based.
That means that there will be no
need for a daily email other than to link you back to the web. But
I have been told in polls run that you prefer your first access to
today's programming by email. I
will continue to produce our cover, the link to the guide (which
will be the same every day), and the hot news of the day. I may
choose to send our supplemental items, like This Week In HD
Sports and HDTV Magazine's WaveGuide, in the morning
mail. So, stay tuned. I am also negotiating with several authors to
help round out the publication with special interest stories and,
of course, the interviews which you have been missing from me of
late. They are always interesting and in the next few days you
will hear from Robert Rast, one of the giants in digital
television, Karl Meisenbach, a real power from HDNet, and Bryan Burns
who has made
ESPN-HD1 and 2 possible. I know you will enjoy them.
LET'S TAKE A TOUR OF THE FEATURES AND DO THE THINGS NEEDED
TO GET STARTED.
(for you frequent user of computers
most everything is intuitive and clearly illustrated on the guide
itself but for any who may have some doubts about this or that the
following should ease your way.)
You will see the term "login/register" on the guide's
upper right corner

By clicking "register" you will begin a one-time set-up (as
long as you have cookies enabled in your browser) and personal
profile.
My Account

Illustration 1
Take a minute right now to fill in this form
(Illustration 1). Let me recommend that you use your existing username/password
which you use elsewhere on our site. (If you are
like me too many passwords just clutters. But if you want to use a
unique new one, you certainly can.
OK, got it filled in? Click on the save button. That
will both save the input as well as take you to the guide. But your not done yet with your
customization process.
Now that you are logged in let's go back to the upper right
corner and
click on "edit profile"
Illustration 2
You can edit just the HDTV stations which you can receive. No sense in having those
you can't unless, of course, you are studying the market and
industry.
Done that? Now let's choose the HDTV channels you
can receive from cable, over-the-air and/or satellite. When you
are through those are the
only channels which will appear in your personal grid guide.

Illustration 3
My Stations
By clicking on "My Stations" you begin the adding
process for your HDTV channels. We begin with the default listings
of all of the channels which we have listed in our traditional
guide. If you can receive those stations then click each box so
that it has a check mark.

Illustration 4

Illustration 5
Now let's add some channels not in the default list that you can
also receive.
Click on "Add Stations"
(Illustration 5) found at the bottom of the list of
My Stations.
You will receive the following window.
Search Stations/Channels
You can do a search for your HDTV channels by listing it by
call letters, by channel name, by affiliation. You refine your
search (narrow it) by using any or all of the "City" or "State"
or "Zip" fields (see below in
Illustration 6)

Illustration 6
TYPE IN YOUR CHANNEL NAME OR STATION

Illustration 7
In this illustration 7 I chose HDNet in the "Name/Call Sign"
field.
The search results show HDNet as affiliated by satellite. Click
the check box and click on "Add Selected".
That will save the channel in your profile so that it will show
in the grid guide when we call it up again.
Continue using the search function and "add selected"
channels until you have all of your HDTV channels listed.
Note: There are still bugs in the
system. I had trouble calling up the "Add Stations" after
the first one. I have contacted Shane to advise him. But let's go
on in the presumption that this gets repaired.
Returning To Grid
Once you have your stations selected then click at the top of
the "My Stations" window on either "Now Showing"
or "Prime Time" This will return you to the grid where you
should see all all of the channels you have listed.

Illustration 8
Calendar and times
Your grid guide has a forward look-a-head of
two weeks. You may select the date on the calendar and the times
in the pull down box. This will give you a new window with the
times you have selected along with the date you have selected.

Illustration 9
Program Descriptions

Program descriptions
Each program has a description just as you have become used to
receiving in your present guide. To access this description simply
place the mouse pointer over the program name in the grid. The
information pops up immediately. In due time we turn those small
boxes into bigger ones with a full colorful presentation as you
have become used to seeing here at HDTV Magazine. HDTV is big
and colorful and the guide can in the end be no less.

NAB Argues
for Free OTA TV
The National
Association of Broadcasters continued to argue for over-the-air
free TV at the Federal Communications Commission Tuesday, saying
in a filing that no TV viewers should be left behind during the
switch to digital TV.
The NAB warned
against any potential disruption for households that get only
over-the-air TV and for cable and satellite TV subscribers who
have OTA-only analog sets when analog broadcasting is turned off
and TV goes digital. "While we recognize the important demands for
the broadcast spectrum to be reclaimed after the transition, we
emphasize here the caution that the commission must employ in
advancing the conversion to digital and ceasing analog
broadcasting," the NAB said.
In its second
set of comments on the issue, NAB said a large portion of the 18.9
percent of U.S. households that receive television over the air do
so by choice, not because economics dictates it.
The association
cited a study from Sinclair Broadcasting in which almost half of
respondents indicated they do not subscribe to cable or satellite
TV for reasons other than cost. And a survey from the Consumer
Electronics Association found that less than 30 percent of
households that have chosen not to subscribe to cable or DBS
indicate that insufficient funds play a role in their decision not
to subscribe.
Many
Spanish-speaking viewers choose not to subscribe to cable or
satellite TV since these services offer primarily English-language
programming, NAB said. And there is a large number of viewers who
cannot afford pay television, given that 12 percent of U.S.
households fall below the poverty line, the organization said.
"Over-the-air
viewers have important, well thought out and legitimate reasons
for relying on over-the-air reception, NAB said. "They believe in
the value of free, over-the-air television, they do not want to be
locked into the ever-increasing costs of pay television service,
they view primarily alternative-language programming, they have
additional sets that are not hooked up to cable or satellite,
among others." |

Frank Abagnale Jr. was a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer. Not bad for a
guy with no license, no degrees--and who had not even graduated from
high school. From director Steven Spielberg comes this dazzling,
humorous tale starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the young con-man who
forged jobs, checks and identities on a daily basis while outwitting
the FBI throughout the late 1960s. Tom Hanks co-stars as the driven
FBI agent who makes stopping Abagnale his personal quest. Also with

out of that ultra-violent future arrives the T-X (Kristanna Loken), an
unstoppable (and very sexy) cyborg whose mission is to eliminate
Connor before he can prevent imminent nuclear annihilation. Luckily,
he's got a benevolent bodyguard in the T-101 (Schwarzenegger), an
obsolete cyborg with a lot of heart. First-rate action, sound and

February 2 again...and again...and again! Is there no way out of this
time warp? With Chris Elliott.

obsolete cyborg with a lot of heart. First-rate action, sound and
