Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), in a session held on December 22 to announce its "2001 Domestic Production Forecasts for the Japanese Electronics Industry," unveiled that shipment of TV receiver units and tuners for BS digital broadcasting will reach 8.6 million units in year 2003. The 1000th day after launch of BS digital broadcasting falls during 2003 and the industry has set "10 million units in 1000 days" as the shipment goal for compatible TV receiver units and tuners. JEITA expressed its view that the forecast is not that far away from the industry goal.
Production volume of digital TV receiver units in year 2000 is estimated at 200,000 (58 billion yen in production value). JEITA forecasts that this will grow to 900,000 units (226.8 billion yen in production value) in 2001. Also according to JEITA's forecast, shipment of BS digital broadcasting tuners will be 400,000 units in 2000 and 600,000 units in 2001. This will make cumulative shipment of BS digital TV receiver units and tuners reach 2.1 million units in year 2001.
